Free public transport for Cluj students as new school year approaches

Students in Cluj-Napoca and nearby metropolitan communes will be able to travel free on local and metropolitan public transport throughout the 2026-27 school year.

The Cluj Public Transport Company, known as CTP, said free passes can be loaded onto transport cards from Wednesday, Sept. 2, at ticket machines in stations and at its sales centers. The scheme covers students in primary, middle, high school and post-secondary education in Cluj-Napoca, Florești, Baciu, Apahida, Gilău, Ciurila, Feleacu, Chinteni, Aiton, Petreștii de Jos and Săvădisla.

Students who held passes during the previous school year can extend them at station machines before they expire, up to Sept. 30, 2026. Children entering preparatory class will receive cards loaded with free passes through their schools.

Students enrolled in the 2026-27 school year at accredited or authorized pre-university education institutions in Cluj-Napoca and the metropolitan communes benefit from free local and metropolitan public transport throughout the school year.

Students seeking a different pass, those without a card or those who have lost one must visit a CTP sales center. They may need a validated student card or school certificate, an identity card or birth certificate, and proof of residence. A request form is required for a first card, while the photograph can come from an identity document, student card or another image on a phone.

CTP has urged students to renew their passes at station machines during September to reduce congestion at sales centers.
