French couple in custody after five infant remains found at home

A French couple is in custody after authorities discovered the remains of five infants in their home in Orange, southeastern France. The grim discovery was made Monday, a day after the 32-year-old woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy at home. She was subsequently taken to the hospital, and the newborn has been placed with social services.

The investigation began when the 32-year-old man, who lived with the woman, reportedly became concerned upon realizing late in her pregnancy that his partner was expecting. He searched their home in the historic city center and found what appeared to be human remains. He alerted the hospital, which then notified the prosecutor’s office.

Judicial sources confirmed the couple was taken into custody on Wednesday. Preliminary findings from a forensic doctor suggest the remains likely belong to five newborns. Further autopsies are scheduled to confirm the details. The couple also has two older children, aged eight and nine, who have been placed with relatives.
