French league fines PSG 150,000 euros over pitch condition

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has been fined 150,000 euros by the French Professional Football League (LFP) due to the poor condition of the pitch at their home stadium, the Parc des Princes. The league's Competition Commission imposed the sanction after the pitch was deemed unfit for the team's opening match of the season, which was originally scheduled to be played there last Sunday.

The LFP cited Article 501.4 of its regulations, which outlines obligations regarding the state of playing surfaces. The pitch at the Parc des Princes had reportedly suffered throughout the summer due to heatwaves affecting the entire country. As a result, the match had to be relocated and was played at the Stade Rennais, the originally scheduled away team's stadium.

PSG managed to secure an agreement with the LFP to reverse the fixture, meaning the return match will be played at the Parc des Princes on the weekend of March 6. Stade Rennais had argued that the return match should also be played at their stadium, as they were not responsible for the initial fixture reversal. They estimated potential losses of around 500,000 euros due to the urgent need to organize the rearranged game.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by groundskeepers during extreme weather conditions and the financial and logistical implications for clubs when stadiums do not meet league standards. The fine serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining playing surfaces to ensure fair competition and player safety.
