Fritz wins Washington ATP title, ending final losing streak

Taylor Fritz has captured his first ATP title of the year, triumphing at the ATP 500 tournament in Washington. The American, ranked ninth in the world, defeated Spain's Rafael Jodar 7-6 (2), 6-4 in the final. This victory marks the end of a four-match losing streak for Fritz in ATP Tour finals and his first title in 14 months.

The championship match was originally scheduled for Sunday but was postponed to Monday due to severe weather in the U.S. capital. In the first set, neither player managed to break serve, with Fritz ultimately dominating the tie-break to take the lead. The second set saw Fritz build an early 3-0 advantage with two breaks, though he conceded one of those breaks in the fourth game.

Fritz maintained his one-break lead until the final game, where he served for the match. He initially failed to convert two match points but was eventually able to secure the title on his third opportunity. Jodar, the 19-year-old Spaniard, had fought back to reach a potential 5-5 scoreline, but his unforced errors in the crucial moments allowed the 28-year-old American to close out the match.

This is Fritz's 11th career title and his first of 2026. He had previously lost in the finals of Dallas, Stuttgart, and Halle earlier in the year. For Jodar, this was his second career final appearance, and he remains with one title won this year in Marrakech.
