From Germany’s elections to attacks in Ukraine: Images of the day

European politics dominates the day’s images. In Germany, Alternative for Germany leaders reviewed the results of regional elections in Saxony-Anhalt, with Ulrich Siegmund appearing alongside national party leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla.

In France, Emmanuel Macron welcomed South Korean President Lee Jae-myung to Saint-Paul-de-Vence. The two took part in the Lumière summit, dedicated to the future of cinema and the audiovisual industry. Ursula von der Leyen also visited Greenland with Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, as international interest in the Arctic island and its strategic importance grows. In Switzerland, striking campaign posters appeared along roads ahead of a referendum on food security.

The war in Ukraine supplied some of the day’s harshest images. Emergency services worked in Zaporizhzhia after new Russian drone and air attacks struck several parts of the city. Firefighters and rescue teams responded at a truck parking area and a shopping center hit by the bombardment.

Tensions elsewhere were also visible. A large billboard criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump stood in Tehran, while Russia and North Korea opened their first road bridge across the Tumen River, creating a new land connection between the two countries. In Spain, Princess Leonor began a new stage of her education at the Carlos III University campus in Getafe, where she will study political science. In Madrid, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez presented Casa 47, a new platform operated by the public housing and land company.

In the Americas, a cargo plane operating for Amazon ran off the runway while landing at Miami International Airport, struck several vehicles and caught fire. In Mexico, a pyrotechnics explosion during a patron-saint festival in Santa María Canchesdá killed at least 10 people and injured dozens. In Chile, social organizations, victims’ relatives and human rights groups again marched through Santiago to commemorate the 1973 coup. The day also included Rock in Rio in Rio de Janeiro and the return of Roum’s traditional donkey race in southern Lebanon.
