From Silence to Stage: Child with Autism Graduates from Early Intervention Program

The Eden Social Welfare Foundation's early intervention center in Chiayi celebrated the graduation of seven children, referred to as "slow-flying angels," on August 1, 2026. Among them, a child named Wei-wei, who has autism and a speech development delay, captivated the audience with his confident performance in a stage play.

Wei-wei's family, who took time off work to attend the ceremony, were deeply moved by his transformation. Just four years ago, Wei-wei had minimal verbal skills and rarely made eye contact. Today, he is described as lively, cheerful, and brave enough to stand on stage. In the play, he took on the role of a "sheep boss," leading younger sheep characters and delivering his lines clearly, demonstrating a significant breakthrough in his communication abilities.

His maternal grandparents played a crucial role in his journey, accompanying him to the center daily for two hours, regardless of the weather. They recalled challenges like Wei-wei's sensory sensitivity, particularly his resistance to wearing a raincoat, which required repeated patience and guidance. Overcoming such small obstacles represented major achievements for him and tested his family's perseverance.

Wei-wei's progress has been very significant since coming to the day program. From only being able to say single words at first, he can now use complete sentences to talk with his family and even bravely stand on stage to perform.

"The early intervention teachers are very kind and have effective methods," his grandmother shared with relief. She noted that Wei-wei's progress since joining the center has been remarkable. He has moved from speaking single words to using complete sentences to communicate with his family and performing on stage. This short performance serves as a testament to his four years of early intervention and cumulative growth.

Yang Bi-hui, the regional director for the Eden Social Welfare Foundation in Yunlin-Chiayi, stated that the early intervention center has been serving families for 24 years. She emphasized that every child has the potential to grow, especially with professional intervention during the critical 0-6 age period. With sufficient time, patience, and support, these children can gradually build their abilities and confidence to fly toward their own futures.
