From tomorrow, PNP will fine electric motorcycle drivers S/550 for invading bike lanes

Starting August 2, the National Police of Peru (PNP) will impose a S/550 fine on electric motorcycle riders caught using dedicated bike lanes. Authorities consider these lanes strictly for bicycles and authorized personal mobility devices, aiming to enhance safety for non-motorized transport users.

The measure follows a 45-day orientation campaign conducted by the PNP's Traffic Directorate across Lima. This campaign informed riders about the new regulations, emphasizing that electric motorcycles, categorized under 'L' for motorized vehicles, must use the main roadway alongside conventional motorcycles.

Failure to comply with documentation requirements will result in additional penalties. Drivers must possess a license plate, Compulsory Accident Insurance (SOAT), vehicle identification card, and potentially a B-IIa driver's license if their vehicle's top speed exceeds 25 kilometers per hour, as per the National Transit Regulations.

Fines for violating bike lane rules can escalate significantly when combined with other infractions. Driving without a license can incur a fine of S/2,750, while operating without valid SOAT or a license plate can each result in a S/660 penalty. The PNP urges electric motorcycle riders to regularize their documentation and respect bike lane usage to ensure safer public road circulation.
