FSB Claims Killing of Suspected Ukrainian Agent Planning Energy Facility Attack

Russia's domestic intelligence agency, the FSB, announced it has killed a man accused of plotting a terrorist attack against an energy facility. According to the FSB's statement, the 49-year-old man was acting on behalf of Ukraine's military intelligence service, HUR. The agency alleges the suspect, born in 1966, had contacted HUR and surveyed a railway line near a major regional energy facility in the Ural Federal District for a sabotage operation. He reportedly hid a homemade explosive device in a building in Tyumen. The FSB claims that during his arrest, the suspect opened fire on agency employees with an assault rifle, resulting in his death. These allegations could not be independently verified. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, numerous sabotage incidents targeting infrastructure and attacks on military personnel have occurred within Russia, with Russian investigators frequently blaming Kyiv's intelligence services. The FSB regularly reports thwarting alleged sabotage or terrorist acts, often resulting in the death of suspects.
