Fuel Leak Remediation Underway in Iztacalco Following Suspected Illegal Siphoning

Remediation efforts are actively underway in Iztacalco, Mexico City, after a fuel leak contaminated the Granjas México neighborhood for over a week. The incident is attributed to a suspected illegal fuel siphon, commonly known as 'huachicol'.

Representatives from various government bodies, including the Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC), Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), and the National Guard, convened to oversee the ongoing work on Añil Street. Excavations have been conducted at five of the eight planned locations to pinpoint the affected zone and confirm the pipeline's integrity. Efforts to control and seal the damaged duct are in progress to mitigate further fuel spillage.

To address the contamination, a specialized well has been dug to a depth of four meters to extract the leaked fuel. The SGIRPC plans to construct five additional monitoring wells to help identify any potential fractures, acts of vandalism, or perforations in the pipeline. Daily explosivity monitoring is being carried out to rule out safety risks, and the sewage system will undergo regular washing with soap to remove any remaining contaminants. Despite lingering fuel odors reported by some residents, officials assert that there is no current risk to the public.
