Fugitive Arrested in Karpathos After Hotel Room Theft

Authorities in Karpathos have apprehended a 34-year-old foreign national in connection with the theft of valuables from a hotel room. The man was intercepted on a ferry preparing to depart the island, attempting to evade capture.

The incident occurred on the evening of August 11, 2026, when the suspect reportedly entered an unoccupied hotel room through an unsecured balcony door. He allegedly stole valuables, a computer, and money before fleeing the scene. Following a report by the hotel guests, police launched an immediate investigation.

Early on August 12, 2026, officers located the suspect aboard a ferry, moments before its scheduled departure. During his apprehension, the man provided false identification and lacked proper travel documents. A subsequent verification of his identity revealed that he was a fugitive, having absconded from a correctional facility after failing to return from an authorized leave.

The stolen property and cash were successfully recovered and subsequently identified by the rightful owners. The 34-year-old is now facing charges for theft, making false statements, and escaping custody. He is expected to be transferred to the Rhodes Public Prosecutor's Office.
