Fujimori meets with IOC President in Lima, discusses sports hosting capacity

Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori welcomed International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kristy Coventry to the Government Palace in Lima. The meeting focused on Peru's readiness to host major sporting events, particularly in light of Lima's upcoming role as host of the Pan American Games next year.

According to a press release from the Peruvian Presidency, Coventry's visit signals the confidence of global sports governing bodies in Peru's ability to manage significant events and establish itself as a regional sports leader. The visit also reinforced the view of sport as a catalyst for social change, capable of creating opportunities for children and young people, encouraging healthy habits, and fostering a more integrated and secure society.

The discussions occurred during the second day of Panam Sports Week, an event organized by the Pan American Sports Organization. Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell, a former world record holder, was honored for his career achievements. Powell also participated in a forum on 'Women in Sport,' which addressed strategies for promoting equal opportunities for female athletes.

IOC President Coventry stressed that achieving gender equality in sports is a shared responsibility. "No one within this movement can forge this future alone. The equality of women is not an exclusive issue for women, it is a shared responsibility, and that is why we really need all of us," she stated. The forum included former Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla, an IOC member, and athletes such as Canadian rower Jane Thornton, Brazilian pentathlete Yane Marques, and Peruvian volleyball player Cecilia Tait.
