FundéuRAE Recommends 'Colección de Preotoño' Over 'Pre-Fall Collection'

The Spanish Foundation for Urgent Spanish (FundéuRAE) has offered guidance on the appropriate use of Spanish terms in fashion reporting, specifically addressing the term "pre-fall."

FundéuRAE, a collaboration between the EFE agency and the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), advises that the English phrase "pre-fall collection" can be effectively replaced with the Spanish expression "colección de preotoño." Alternatively, the adjective "preotoñal" can be used to describe such collections.

These terms refer to fashion lines released by brands as an early preview of the upcoming autumn-winter season. Examples cited by FundéuRAE include phrases like "Scottish plaids and other plaid prints are identified as key prints for this year's pre-fall collection." The foundation suggests that such sentences would be more accurately rendered in Spanish as "Los cuadros escoceses y otros estampados de cuadros se identifican como los estampados clave para la colección de preotoño de este año."

In broader contexts, the phrase "colección de entretiempo" (transitional season collection) may also be used to denote these or other interim periods. FundéuRAE's primary mission is to ensure the proper and effective use of the Spanish language within media communications.
