FUOYE Reform: Group Calls for Federal Funding Boost, Hails Anti-extortion Drive

A civil society organization has called for increased federal funding for Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), citing the need for sustained investment in infrastructure, research, and technology to support the institution's reform efforts. The Partnership for Ethical Governance (PEG) specifically praised Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joshua Ogunwole for decisive actions to enhance institutional governance and implement a strict policy against extortion and unethical practices.

PEG's assessment, presented to journalists in Ado-Ekiti, concluded that FUOYE is undergoing a "deliberate, systematic and measurable process of institutional renewal" under Ogunwole, who took office in February 2026. The group noted that these developments extend beyond recent controversies, representing a broader management effort to bolster governance, restore public trust, and address institutional weaknesses.

Olawole Oladapo, a PEG representative, highlighted the administration's response to allegations of lecturers demanding illegal payments from students. He stated that the university's zero-tolerance policy, supported by senate approval and clear sanctions, marks a significant stride toward accountability and ethical conduct. PEG's assessment, conducted after years of negative publicity surrounding FUOYE, aimed to independently verify reform reports.

"However, our observations during the assessment present a significantly different narrative, one that deserves to be shared with the Nigerian public," Oladapo said. Interactions with staff, students, and management, along with campus project inspections, revealed notable improvements in administrative discipline, transparency, and institutional direction. PEG also recognized FUOYE's eight-point covenant with its community as evidence of intentional transformation through measurable reforms. The university is also focusing on research, with internal funds allocated to activities, and plans for an independent power plant and digital transformation initiatives, including an AI-driven portal and a research library.
