Gan Ching Hwee breaks Singapore's 400m freestyle national record at Commonwealth Games

Singapore's Gan Ching Hwee has broken her own national record in the 400m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games.

Competing in Glasgow, Scotland, Gan clocked 4:09.34 in the women's final, securing fifth place. This performance surpasses her previous record of 4:09.81, which she set at the World Aquatics Championships last year.

Gan, who recently turned 23, is participating in her debut Commonwealth Games. She currently holds five individual national records. Her 2025 season was particularly strong, as she set three national records in freestyle events (400m, 800m, and 1,500m) at the World Aquatics Championships. She was also the first Singaporean female swimmer to reach a final at that meet since 2007.

In addition to her national records, Gan achieved a clean sweep of the 200m, 400m, and 800m freestyle events at the 2025 SEA Games, marking her third consecutive victory in these races.
