Garbage bags fall from truck, land under car in Taiwan; sanitation worker faces discipline

A driver in Taiwan experienced a frightening incident when two large garbage bags unexpectedly fell from a recycling truck ahead of him and landed beneath his car. The driver was traveling on Provincial Highway No. 74 towards Changhua when the bags dislodged from the truck's cargo area. Due to air currents, the bags drifted directly towards his vehicle and slid under the chassis.

The driver heard unusual noises from under his car and, fearing the bags might become lodged in the undercarriage, quickly exited the highway. Upon inspection on a surface road, he discovered the bags had not become stuck. However, he expressed disbelief at the situation, stating, "It's too ridiculous, the garbage bags weren't secured properly." He emphasized the potential danger if such an incident were to cause an accident.

Zhang Xiaowei, head of the Changhua City Public Works Department's sanitation team, confirmed that the sanitation worker involved will be referred to the performance review committee for disciplinary action. The department has regulations requiring team members to inspect their vehicles for any potential falling objects before leaving work or returning to the depot.

Automotive repair professionals noted that foreign objects lodged in a car's undercarriage can compromise driving safety and even pose a fire risk. They advise drivers who find debris under their vehicle to pull over safely, activate hazard lights, and if possible and safe, remove the debris themselves. For larger or more complex situations involving critical components like the drive shaft or exhaust system, contacting roadside assistance is recommended.
