Garuda Indonesia Shifts to Piece-Based Baggage System September 1

Garuda Indonesia is set to revise its baggage policy, transitioning to a "piece concept" system for tickets purchased on or after September 1, 2026. This change means that baggage allowances will be determined by the number of bags (pieces) rather than the total weight of checked luggage.

Neil Raymond Mills, Garuda Indonesia's Director of Transformation, explained that the piece concept aims to offer customers clearer information regarding their baggage capacity from the outset of travel planning. "We want to encourage customers to have increasingly clear information from the moment they plan their trip, how much baggage can be carried and what the weight limit is for each bag," Mills stated. This clarity is expected to facilitate better preparation and a smoother airport experience.

Under the new system, if a ticket allows for one piece of luggage up to 23 kilograms, passengers can only bring one bag of that weight. Bringing two bags, even if their combined weight is within a larger limit, will be counted as two pieces. For domestic economy class, the allowance is typically one piece up to 23 kilograms. International economy passengers may receive up to two pieces, each weighing a maximum of 23 kilograms. Business and First Class passengers can have up to two pieces, with a weight limit of 32 kilograms per piece, depending on the route and ticket type.

Garuda Indonesia advises passengers to check their e-ticket for the most accurate baggage information, as allowances vary by route, class, and ticket type. Passengers are also encouraged to weigh their bags individually before departure to ensure compliance with the per-piece weight limits.
