Gender parity in Brazil's legislature unlikely until 2062, study finds

Gender parity in Brazil's legislative assemblies and the Chamber of Deputies will not be reached until 2062, according to a study by RenovaBR, a school for political leaders. The projection, based on the average growth in the participation of women and Black individuals elected between 2014 and 2022, also indicates that racial proportionality will only be achieved in 2046.

Data from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) show that the representation of women among elected officials rose from approximately 11% in 2014 to 18% in 2022. For Black individuals, the proportion increased from about 24% in 2014 to 32% in 2022.

Rodrigo Cobra, RenovaBR's executive director, stated that the study highlights the slow pace of change. "If we want to reduce this timeframe, it is necessary to expand opportunities for more women and Black individuals to arrive competitively at elections," Cobra said. He emphasized that leadership training, including technical preparation, campaign guidance, and strengthening support networks, is a vital step in this process.
