Generator brings relief to Dhunche residents after five-day power outage

A generator has brought a basic but vital service back to Dhunche: the ability to call home. Electricity has been out across Nepal’s Rasuwa district for five days after a devastating flood in the Bhotekoshi River on August 26.

The Nepal Red Cross Society brought the generator to the district headquarters with support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The Rasuwa Red Cross chapter and Tilganga Eye Centre jointly took the initiative to provide the charging service.

Residents, flood victims and pilgrims in Dhunche had been cut off from family members and the outside world. The new facility allows people to charge their phones free of charge, with more than 100 people able to use it at the same time, according to the Red Cross.

The restored phone access has allowed residents to tell relatives living far away that they are safe. “The phone calls have reconnected broken hopes and brought comfort to hearts filled with worry,” one resident said.

Technical teams are working to repair the flood-damaged electricity service and resume power supply as soon as possible.
