German Finance Minister Demands Solution to Aviation Fuel Shortage

Germany's Finance Minister, Lars Klingbeil, has sounded a serious alarm regarding the escalating shortage of aviation fuel in Europe, a crisis exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Iran. Speaking to Der Spiegel, Klingbeil emphasized that the warnings about kerosene shortages must be taken "very seriously," highlighting that the issue extends beyond mere price fluctuations to encompass critical supply security.

The situation is dire, with kerosene prices more than doubling since the war in Iran began. A significant portion of Europe's aviation fuel supply originates from the Middle East, and damage to or destruction of oil facilities in the region has severely disrupted these crucial supply chains. Klingbeil cautioned that the repercussions of the Middle East conflict could be long-lasting, likening the current predicament to the severe energy crisis that gripped Europe after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

As the vice-chancellor and co-chair of the Social Democratic Party, Klingbeil seized this moment to push for a fundamental reform of Germany's energy policy. He issued a direct call to the ruling coalition, including the conservative CDU/CSU, to expedite the shift away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy sources. Klingbeil argued that enhancing the country's resilience and diminishing its reliance on imported fossil fuels are paramount, especially in light of the vulnerabilities exposed by the war in Iran.
