German Firefighters Battle Large Forest Fire in Rhein-Erft District

More than 120 firefighters are currently engaged in combating a significant forest and vegetation fire in Germany's Rhein-Erft district. The blaze is spreading along the L91 road, situated between the towns of Oberaußem and Glessener Höhe.

According to the Bergheim fire department, initial drone assessments indicate that the fire has affected roughly 81,500 square meters of forest, meadow, and embankment areas. Firefighting operations began shortly after 3:00 PM. The fire reportedly originated near Hallerhof, behind the RWE railway line, before spreading to the opposite side towards Quadrath-Ichendorf.

While the fire on the Oberaußem side is now under control and undergoing extensive post-extinguishing work, efforts to contain the flames on the opposite side are ongoing. The duration of the operation remains uncertain. Firefighters are working to extinguish the remaining hotspots and prevent further spread.

The fire department has issued a public appeal, urging residents to avoid the Glessener Höhe area until further notice. Individuals who detect smoke or the smell of burning are advised to keep their windows and doors closed to minimize potential health risks and prevent the fire from entering homes.
