German school attack: One injured girl released from hospital

One of two 13-year-old girls critically injured in a knife attack at a Schongau high school has been released from the hospital, a police spokesperson confirmed. The "Münchner Merkur" first reported the development.

The 16-year-old suspect, who is in custody, faces charges including attempted murder. Investigators have found indications of an extremist motive, leading the Bavarian Central Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism (ZET) to take over the case. The attack on July 8 injured two 13-year-old girls. Mitschüler provided first aid, likely saving one of the girls' lives.

Police and prosecutors had previously stated that the 16-year-old Croatian national was under investigation for two incidents in 2025. He allegedly threatened classmates and glorified school shootings on social media. Following the attack, a knife, a pistol, and ammunition were seized. The firearm was reportedly found in a backpack the suspect left on the school grounds. He is believed to have fired the pistol once, but it malfunctioned. Investigators are also examining a letter that may have been written by the suspect, containing insults directed at religious communities, population groups, classmates, and teachers.
