Germany Faces Extreme Heat and Record Low Rhine River Levels

Residents of North Rhine-Westphalia are facing a severe heatwave, with the German Weather Service (DWD) issuing warnings for intense heat up to 34 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Following a tropical night, the entire state is under a heat advisory, a day after warnings were issued for large parts of the most populous German state. The DWD also cautioned about the possibility of severe thunderstorms in parts of the Cologne and Düsseldorf administrative districts on Tuesday evening.

In addition to the heat, ozone concentrations have slightly exceeded information thresholds in Duisburg-Walsum, Münster-Geist, and Ratingen-Tiefenbroich. Sensitive individuals are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities. The DWD recommends avoiding direct sunlight, postponing outdoor activities to early mornings, drinking plenty of fluids, wearing light clothing, consuming light meals, and abstaining from alcohol. Homes should be protected from the sun and ventilated during cooler periods. Cities like Bochum and Bielefeld have issued specific guidance for the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions, urging them to protect themselves from the heat and seek shade and water if experiencing symptoms like dizziness or headaches.

The Rhine River in Germany is experiencing a record low, with the Waterways and Shipping Office Rhine forecasting even more drastic drops on Thursday and Friday. The expected water level at Cologne on Friday is only 63 centimeters, surpassing the previous historical low of 69 centimeters recorded on October 23, 2018. This critically low water level is expected to worsen, with a spokesperson for the office stating that the situation is likely to become even more acute. The low water levels have significant implications for shipping and water management across the region.

The dry conditions have also led to a high risk of forest fires, particularly in Duisburg. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid open fires. The forecast for the week indicates a gradual decrease in temperatures, with highs expected to reach around 26 degrees Celsius by Thursday. However, intermittent showers and thunderstorms are possible throughout the week, adding to the challenging weather conditions.
