Germany Plans Major Expansion of Civil Protection

In a decisive move to bolster national resilience, Germany is embarking on a significant expansion of its civil protection and disaster response infrastructure. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced plans to strengthen the country's defense against hybrid threats and enhance support for the vital work of volunteer rescuers.

This initiative, detailed in a report by the newspaper Bild, outlines a comprehensive ten-billion-euro program. The funding will be allocated to crucial areas such as acquiring 1,000 new specialized vehicles and 110,000 field beds by 2029, alongside upgrading equipment, facilities, and personnel for the Federal Office for Technical Assistance (THW).

The strategy, dubbed 'model 3-A,' emphasizes clear tasks, better equipment, and comprehensive training for civil protection. A key innovation is the development of a digital warning system integrated with a mobile app (NINA) to guide citizens to the nearest public shelters, which will be comprehensively mapped across the country. Furthermore, Dobrindt intends to introduce civil protection education in schools, fostering a culture of preparedness from a young age.
