Germany's army seeks female recruits but finds little interest

BERLIN, Germany – The German armed forces, the Bundeswehr, are facing an urgent need for personnel and are finding it particularly challenging to attract women. Despite efforts, female interest in a military career remains low, with women currently constituting only 13.7% of the total military personnel, and a mere 10% in combat units.

Interviews with young women on the streets of Berlin reveal several deterrents. Some cited incompatibility with their life plans, studies, and work. Others expressed a fundamental opposition to war. A recurring theme was the reported experiences of sexism faced by women already serving in the military, making a career in the Bundeswehr seem unappealing.

The Bundeswehr has set a target of 20% female personnel, a goal that appears increasingly distant given the current trends. The parliamentary committee for the armed forces noted a decrease in female applicants in 2025 compared to the previous year. This is concerning as the army plans to expand its ranks by at least 75,000 soldiers by 2035 to strengthen national defense and fulfill NATO obligations.

Sara Nanni, defense policy spokesperson for the Green Party in the Bundestag, highlighted that while women do join the military, they tend to leave earlier than men, particularly when starting a family. She noted that balancing family life with military service is exceptionally difficult within the Bundeswehr, despite provisions for childcare and flexible work arrangements. Furthermore, numerous cases of sexual harassment within the military have been reported, with Nanni suggesting the ministry has not adequately addressed the issue over the years, creating a discouraging environment for potential female recruits.
