Ghana Education Minister Discusses Damongo University Project with Chinese Ambassador

Ghana’s proposed University of Science and Technology in Damongo will need far more funding than the $30 million grant already secured from China, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu said during talks with Chinese Ambassador Cong Song.

The grant, obtained last year, is intended to begin construction. Iddrisu said it would not cover the full cost of establishing and equipping the university, which he estimated at more than $100 million. He called for additional financial support and stronger partnerships to complete the project and provide the required facilities.

The proposed institution is expected to focus on science and technology, robotics, digital sciences and artificial intelligence. The minister described it as a future centre of excellence in those fields and other emerging areas.

Idrisu also outlined a broader government plan to establish universities in regions across Ghana that currently lack one. The policy aims to widen access to tertiary education and support more balanced national development.

Cong praised the minister’s leadership and commitment to Ghana’s education agenda. He also reaffirmed the importance of cooperation between Ghana and China in developing education and strengthening bilateral relations.
