Ghana fully funded evacuation of nationals from South Africa- Foreign Affairs Ministry

The Ghanaian government has confirmed it fully financed the evacuation of more than 1,600 citizens from South Africa after recent xenophobic violence. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified on Thursday, August 13, 2026, that Ghana did not request financial or material assistance from the South African government for this operation.

The Ministry was responding to media reports that South Africa was seeking about $18 million in reimbursement from some African countries for costs incurred in supporting and evacuating their nationals.

This statement comes in response to media reports suggesting South Africa sought reimbursement from several African nations for costs associated with supporting and evacuating their nationals. The Ministry emphasized that all expenses for the Ghanaian evacuation were covered by the Ghanaian government and its partners. The evacuation process, which began in May 2026, is ongoing, and evacuees receive reintegration funds, transport, and relief items upon arrival in Ghana.

It reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and welfare of Ghanaians living abroad.

The Ministry assured the public that Ghana would not be among the countries asked to reimburse repatriation costs. It reiterated the government's dedication to safeguarding the welfare and lives of Ghanaians living abroad, pledging to take timely action whenever their safety and security are threatened. Gratitude was extended to President John Mahama and Ghanaian partners for their support in this fully Ghanaian-funded initiative.
