Ghana launches MoMo FinTech Lab to boost financial technology innovation

Ghana's financial technology ecosystem is set to receive a significant boost with the launch of the MoMo FinTech Lab by MobileMoney FinTech Limited (MMFL). This initiative aims to nurture innovative ideas and foster collaboration, accelerating the growth of the nation's fintech landscape.

The MoMo FinTech Lab will serve as a crucial platform for innovators, startups, students, developers, and industry players across Ghana. Participants will undergo intensive bootcamp training, followed by zonal hackathons to test and refine their prototypes. Ultimately, twelve outstanding teams will advance to a mentorship phase, receiving expert guidance, technical support, and business development training to transform their concepts into viable fintech solutions.

At the launch in Accra, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, emphasized the program's role as a national platform to cultivate local innovation and position Ghana as a leader in digital finance. He urged academia, regulators, financial institutions, investors, and technology innovators to leverage the lab for collaboration in building a resilient and globally competitive financial technology ecosystem.

We want to bring that platform to enable our young talent to build solutions that solve these problems.

The initiative aligns with the government's digital transformation agenda, focusing on digital public infrastructure, affordable connectivity, digital identity reforms, and skills development. MMFL CEO, Mr. Shaibu Haruna, highlighted that the lab's primary focus is on building skills, not just awarding prize money. The top three teams will receive cash prizes of GH¢100,000, GH¢50,000, and GH¢30,000, respectively, along with electronic devices. Interested applicants can submit their ideas through the MoMo App, selecting one of three regional zones: Accra, Kumasi, or Tamale.
