Ghana's National Theatre to undergo major renovation with Chinese support

Ghana's iconic National Theatre is set to receive a major facelift, transforming it into a contemporary cultural center. This revitalization is the result of a high-level bilateral meeting held at the facility, involving key stakeholders from both Ghana and the People's Republic of China. The visit by China's Assistant Minister of Commerce, Mr. Zhang Li, signals a significant step in strengthening the cultural and economic relationship between the two nations.

The discussions centered on the comprehensive rehabilitation of the theatre, a landmark that has stood as a symbol of Ghana-China friendship since its construction in the early 1990s as a gift from China. The proposed upgrades are designed to bring the facility up to modern global standards for performing arts. This includes crucial structural improvements, the installation of state-of-the-art acoustic systems, modern lighting, and enhanced digital capabilities.

Both Ghanaian and Chinese delegations were present, including Ghana's Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and officials from various ministries. The Chinese delegation comprised Ambassador Cong Song and other representatives from the Chinese Embassy and Ministry of Commerce. Experts from Ghana's Architectural and Engineering Services Limited (AESL) reviewed the preliminary technical requirements, ensuring the renovation aligns with Ghana's national tourism and creative arts strategy.

This modernization project is expected not only to renew the National Theatre's role as a premier venue for performing arts but also to preserve its historical and cultural significance. The initiative underscores the ongoing partnership between Ghana and China in safeguarding and developing Ghana's cultural heritage for future generations, reinforcing the enduring bond between the two countries.
