Giant 18cm Grasshopper Discovered in Turkey's Şanlıurfa

A resident of İnanlı neighborhood in Şanlıurfa's Karaköprü district was astonished to discover an exceptionally large grasshopper while out in a field. The sheer size of the insect prompted a closer inspection, leading to the realization that it was a remarkable specimen.

Using a mobile phone, the resident captured footage of the grasshopper, noting its body length at approximately 14 centimeters. With its antennae included, the total length of the insect reached an impressive 18 centimeters. The resident expressed that this was the first time in their life they had encountered such a large grasshopper.

After documenting the unusual find, the grasshopper was released back into its natural environment. Experts identified the species as 'Saga,' colloquially known as the 'giant carnivorous grasshopper.' Despite its imposing size, the species is known to feed on agricultural pests and is considered beneficial to the ecosystem and harmless to humans.
