Glacial collapse triggers massive floods in Nepal; Good Neighbors launches $700,000 relief effort

Global child rights NGO Good Neighbors has initiated a significant emergency relief operation in Nepal, pledging $700,000 (approximately 700 million won) to support communities devastated by recent massive floods. The aid aims to address the immediate needs of those affected by the disaster, which has caused widespread destruction.

The relief efforts will concentrate on the hardest-hit regions, including Gorkha and Nuwakot. Good Neighbors plans to distribute emergency food supplies, establish temporary shelters, provide access to clean drinking water, and implement health programs to prevent the spread of diseases in the aftermath of the floods.

This intervention draws upon Good Neighbors' deep experience in Nepal, particularly their response to the 2015 Gorkha earthquake. At that time, the NGO was among the first to provide aid and played a leading role in the protection cluster, coordinating relief and reconstruction efforts.

Jeon Mi-sun, Secretary General of Good Neighbors, stated, "Based on our past experience responding to the Nepal earthquake, Good Neighbors is doing its best to ensure the safety and psychological stability of sponsored children and local residents." She added, "Warm hands of sharing are desperately needed to help disaster victims who have lost their homes recover their daily lives and rebuild from the damage."

The floods were triggered by the collapse of a large glacier and rocks in the Himalayan region near the Nepal-China border. The disaster has resulted in significant loss of life and widespread damage to infrastructure, with road and communication networks disrupted, complicating rescue and search operations.
