"Godzilla Minus Zero" marks a milestone for Japan ahead of its release

Japan's Godzilla franchise is reaching IMAX in a new way. "Godzilla Minus Zero" will be the first Japanese feature film specifically conceived for the format, giving the next chapter of the monster saga a distinction before it reaches theaters.

Takashi Yamazaki returns to direct the sequel, write its screenplay and oversee its visual effects. He also directed "Godzilla Minus One," which earned the franchise its first Oscar in 2024 after winning Best Visual Effects. A behind-the-scenes preview offered a look at how the new production combines practical effects with digital work. That approach, Yamazaki said, allowed the team to "create something even bigger than the previous film."

The production also used high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX during filming. The completed movie then underwent a specialized image and sound optimization process for IMAX presentation, connecting the production methods directly to the format in which audiences will see it.

The story resumes in 1949, two years after the events of "Godzilla Minus One." Japan is struggling to recover and rebuild everyday life when humanity manages to hold on to a fragile peace. A new threat then appears, destroying that hope in an instant.

Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as Koichi Shikishima, while Minami Hamabe reprises the role of Noriko Oishi. Both characters survived Godzilla's first attack on Tokyo. Chilean audiences will be able to see "Godzilla Minus Zero" in cinemas from Nov. 5.
