Gombe varsity ASUU withdraws from duties over salary reduction

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Federal University Kashere (ASUU-FUK) has launched an "Active Non-Compliance" action, a form of industrial protest short of a full strike, to contest what it calls the unlawful reduction of its members' salaries by the Federal Government.

This action follows a directive from ASUU's National Executive Council (NEC) after negotiations with the university management failed to resolve the salary dispute. The union stated that the Federal Government/ASUU agreement from 2025, which was implemented in January 2026, stipulated certain salary levels. However, ASUU-FUK alleges that these salaries were subsequently reduced in July 2026, constituting a breach of the agreement and causing severe hardship for academic staff.

According to a statement signed by ASUU-FUK Chairperson Dr. Salihu Adam Jidda, the decision was made at an emergency branch congress on August 13, 2026. The union has engaged the Vice-Chancellor through both written and in-person communications, but these efforts have not yielded a solution, leading to the activation of the NEC's directive for Active Non-Compliance.

Effective August 13, ASUU-FUK members will cease participating in teaching, examination preparation and marking, supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research, and attendance at statutory university meetings and committees. The union considers undertaking these official duties during the non-compliance period as anti-union activity. ASUU-FUK described the move as "regrettable but necessary" to compel the government to honor the 2025 agreement and reinstate full salaries, while affirming commitment to student welfare and university integrity.

Consequently, and in line with directives issued by the National Executive Council (NEC), our branch has been placed among those required to activate Active Non-Compliance (ANC), a resolution of the pre-NEC meeting in Benin in 2025.
