ASUU-FUK begins non-compliance action over salary reduction

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Federal University Kashere (FUK) branch has initiated an "Active Non-Compliance" (ANC) action, protesting what they term an unlawful reduction in members' salaries by the Federal Government. This move follows a directive from the union's National Executive Council (NEC) after internal university efforts to resolve the matter proved unsuccessful.

According to a statement signed by ASUU-FUK Chairperson Dr. Salihu Adam Jidda, the decision was made at an emergency branch congress on August 13, 2026. The union cited the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, which was implemented in January 2026, and alleged that salary reductions began in July 2026, constituting a breach of that agreement.

ASUU-FUK asserts that the salary cuts have imposed severe hardships on academic staff, hindering their ability to perform their duties effectively. The branch had previously engaged the university's Vice-Chancellor through written and in-person communications to seek intervention, but these engagements failed to yield a resolution.

Consequently, the branch is now activating the NEC directive on ANC. Effective August 13, ASUU-FUK members will cease teaching, examination preparation and marking, supervision of student research, and participation in statutory university meetings and committees. They are also instructed to suspend other official academic and administrative engagements.

The union described the ANC action as "regrettable but necessary," aiming to compel the Federal Government to honor the 2025 agreement and reinstate full salaries. ASUU-FUK reiterated its commitment to student welfare and the university's integrity, urging swift efforts from the government and university management to resolve the dispute and prevent victimization of its members.
