Google DeepMind announces senior leadership transition

Google's parent company, Alphabet, has announced a notable leadership reshuffling within its artificial intelligence unit, Google DeepMind. The changes aim to streamline leadership and focus on the future of AI and scientific discovery.

Demis Hassabis, one of the key figures behind Google DeepMind's inception, is stepping into a new role as Chairman of Google DeepMind. He will also assume the position of Chief Scientist at Alphabet, a role that will see him dedicate his time and focus to shaping the future of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and scientific breakthroughs. Hassabis will continue his leadership at Isomorphic Labs, a company focused on drug discovery using AI.

Taking the helm as Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind will be Koray Kavukçuoğlu. Kavukçuoğlu, who has been with Google DeepMind for 13 years, previously served as the Chief Technology Officer and Chief AI Architect. In his new capacity, he will be responsible for model development processes, pioneering AI research, the Gemini application, and the developer teams. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai expressed confidence in Kavukçuoğlu, describing him as a globally recognized expert in the field who established their deep learning team and led significant advancements like WaveNet and DQN.
