Google introduces 'video selfie' for easier account access

Google is rolling out a new "video selfie" feature designed to provide users with an alternative method for accessing their accounts if they encounter login issues. This innovative approach aims to enhance security while offering greater convenience.

The technology employs multiple security layers to combat identity theft, particularly from sophisticated threats like deepfakes. When a user opts for the video selfie login, the system compares the recorded video against a previously saved selfie. To ensure authenticity, users are prompted to perform simple, real-time movements, demonstrating that the video is live and not a pre-recorded or manipulated file.

"We compare your video with the saved selfie and ask you to make simple movements to demonstrate that it is a real-time video. We also apply our standard security practices to detect and help prevent suspicious login attempts," Google stated in a press release. This multi-faceted approach aims to bolster account security against unauthorized access.

Setting up the feature is straightforward: users simply look at their device's camera and follow guided head movements to capture their face from various angles. If login problems arise later, users can record a new video selfie, which the system will then compare to the original to verify their identity and grant access. Google emphasized that the "video selfie" remains exclusively the user's property, ensuring they retain complete control over their personal data.
