Google's Gemini AI Surpasses One Billion Users, Becomes Fastest-Growing Product

Google's artificial intelligence application, Gemini, has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing one billion monthly active users. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, announced the achievement on X, highlighting Gemini as the company's fastest-growing product in its history.

This rapid user adoption places Gemini in close competition with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which reached the same one billion user mark in June. Google has been strategically integrating Gemini across its product ecosystem, from Search to the Android operating system. The reported figure specifically pertains to the standalone Gemini application.

User engagement with the Gemini app is robust. According to a post from News from Google, 63% of users interact with Gemini using voice commands. The AI system is also a prolific image generator, producing over 150 million images per day. Furthermore, Gemini has garnered over 100 million active users on iOS, demonstrating its reach beyond Google's native products.

Additional data reveals that students frequently use Gemini for academic tasks, with 38% of their school-related requests involving file attachments. Notably, one in five interactions on Gemini Live extend beyond voice, incorporating camera or screen sharing. Users on macOS engage with Gemini twice as often as those on other platforms. The AI can automate tasks across more than 40 applications, facilitating activities like making reservations.

This milestone follows Google's second-quarter 2026 earnings report, where the company celebrated exceeding 950 million monthly users, with a threefold increase in daily active users over the past year. The announcement also precedes the anticipated "Made by Google" event, where new Pixel devices and other products are expected to be unveiled.
