Google to strengthen connectivity between Americas and Europe with new submarine cable network

Google announced a significant digital infrastructure project named "Americas Connect," which will involve deploying three new submarine cables. These cables will span the Caribbean and Pacific oceans, aiming to bolster connectivity between the Americas, the Caribbean region, and Europe. The initiative is designed to enhance the overall digital infrastructure linking these areas.

The new network comprises several key components. The "Alisios" cable will connect the Dominican Republic, Panama, and Chile. Another cable, "Canoa," will link the Dominican Republic with Bermuda. A third cable, "OlaLuz," is set to connect the Dominican Republic directly to Florida in the southern United States. Additionally, Google will extend the "Firmina" submarine cable, originally designed to link North and South America, to the Dominican Republic, thereby expanding its reach.

These new routes will be interconnected with Google's existing submarine cables, including "Curie," "Nuvem," and "Sol." This integration will create redundant network rings, enhancing both reliability and resilience for data transmission to the United States and Europe. In the Pacific, a submarine ring will establish redundant routes connecting Chile to Panama, with a further link from Panama to the U.S. West Coast. This will directly support Google Cloud regions in Chile, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.

Across the Caribbean Sea, the "Alisios" cable will run from Panama to the Dominican Republic. From there, it will connect via a ring to the U.S. East Coast, serving Google Cloud regions in South Carolina and Virginia. The "OlaLuz" cable will directly link the Dominican Republic to Florida. In the Atlantic, the "Canoa" cable, originating from the Dominican Republic and extending to Bermuda, will interconnect with "Nuvem" and "Sol," forming rings that provide connectivity to both the United States and Madrid, Spain. The "Americas Connect" project promises to significantly improve the reach, reliability, and resilience of digital connectivity.
