Gothenburg's giant aquarium emptied for renovation, cod head to Lysekil

The massive 650,000-liter West Sea aquarium at Universeum in Gothenburg is undergoing a significant renovation, requiring its complete emptying. Leaking joints in the 25-year-old structure necessitate the extensive work, which will see its approximately 50 marine inhabitants temporarily relocated. "The fish will not recognize themselves when they return," stated Terese Swartz, head of marine biology at Universeum, expressing enthusiasm for the project. Some species will remain at Universeum, while others, including a group of cod, will be transported to Lysekil.

The renovation aims to create a more naturalistic and stimulating environment for the fish. Swartz highlighted that improved water quality will reduce the risk of disease spread and help manage rising water temperatures during increasingly common heatwaves. Modern technology will also be implemented to improve energy efficiency. The interior, made of artificial concrete, will be replaced, with Swartz particularly looking forward to building new hiding places for the fish. She hopes the upgraded exhibit will better showcase the intelligence of marine life, allowing for more extensive demonstrations of animal training and feeding in the future.

Preparations for the relocation have been ongoing for some time. While the exact disposal plan for the large volumes of pool water is not yet finalized, it will be gradually released. Following the renovation, the aquarium will be refilled with regular tap water, specially salted and dechlorinated. This water will then need several months to mature before the marine life can be reintroduced. The entire project is anticipated to conclude by autumn 2027. During this period, the ocean aquarium, featuring sharks, will remain accessible to visitors.
