Government Allocates Additional 5.1 Million Lei for Emergency Danube Works to Protect Cernavodă Plant

The Romanian government is taking urgent measures to address severe hydrological drought impacting the Danube River, allocating an additional 5.1 million lei for emergency dredging operations. The funds are designated for critical work aimed at ensuring the continued operation of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant.

Prin prezentul proiect de act normativ se propune aprobarea suplimentării fondurilor necesare finanțării unor cheltuieli urgente și neprevăzute, în vederea realizării, în regim de urgență, a unei intervenții temporare pentru redistribuirea unei părți din debitul brațului Bala către Dunărea Veche.

The primary objective of the intervention is to redirect a portion of the water flow from the Bala arm of the Danube to the Old Danube. This measure is crucial to reduce the risk of the plant's functionality being affected by the critically low water levels. The severe drought conditions pose a significant threat to the national power grid, as the Cernavodă plant is a key component.

Măsura urmărește gestionarea efectelor secetei hidrologice severe și reducerea riscului de afectare a funcționării Sistemului Electroenergetic Național, determinat de posibilitatea indisponibilizării unităților Centralei Nuclearoelectrice Cernavodă.

Specifically, 2.55 million lei will be used for dredging at the critical Cochirleni point, spanning river kilometers 309–304, to remove approximately 50,000 cubic meters of sediment. Another 2.55 million lei is allocated for dredging at the Caragheorghe-Turcescu critical point, river kilometers 345–342, also for about 50,000 cubic meters.

Luptă câștigată, rezultat bun, dar pericolul nu a trecut. Mă bucur mult că eforturile noastre din ultima săptămână pentru intervenția din zona Bala au avut rezultate bune și reactorul 2 de la Centrala nucleară Cernavodă rămâne în funcțiune. Practic, am reușit să inversăm trendul de scădere cu unul de ușoară creștere. Conform estimărilor, cei 8 cm «câștigați» înseamnă că am reușit să redirecționăm spre Cernavodă aproximativ 50 metri cubi de apă pe secundă.

State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu, reported that efforts over the past week have successfully reversed the declining water level trend in the Bala area, leading to a slight increase. He noted that this gain of approximately 8 centimeters means about 50 cubic meters of water per second have been successfully redirected to Cernavodă. However, Scrioșteanu cautioned that the danger is not over, citing the strong and unpredictable currents of the Danube, which could dislodge barges and diminish the redirected flow. Continuous intervention is planned.

Dar pericolul nu a trecut, curenții Dunării sunt puternici și pot fi foarte imprevizibili. În orice moment, barjele pot fi dislocate din poziția actuală și se poate diminua (sau chiar anula) redirecționarea debitului suplimentar spre Cernavodă.
