Govt Intensifies Liberation War Combatants Vetting

The Zimbabwean government is intensifying its efforts to identify and vet all individuals who participated in the country's liberation war. Comprehensive nationwide verification and mop-up exercises targeting war collaborators and non-combatant cadres are currently underway. This initiative seeks to ensure that everyone who contributed to the liberation struggle receives appropriate recognition, welfare support, and national benefits.

Vice President Kembo Mohadi, acting as President, addressed mourners at the burial of national hero Brigadier General (Rtd) Albert Nyamuronda at the National Heroes' Acre in Harare. He announced that the government is engaging with neighboring countries where fallen freedom fighters are interred. The goal is to afford them decent burials and safeguard invaluable liberation heritage sites for present and future generations.

VP Mohadi emphasized that young Zimbabweans must understand the significant cost of the freedoms they enjoy today and the necessity of preserving national history. He referenced the year's Heroes Day theme, "Lest We Forget," challenging every generation to uphold the values of sacrifice, resilience, unity, hard work, and patriotism that defined the liberation struggle.

Following my regional visits to countries such as Zambia and Mozambique last year, to assess the state of our liberation struggle shrines, under the stewardship of His Excellency President Mnangagwa, I am pleased to report that significant progress has been made towards the rehabilitation and improvement of these sites.

Brigadier-General (Rtd) Nyamuronda passed away on August 11 at Chitungwiza General Hospital due to a respiratory tract infection. He was 67. VP Mohadi reported significant progress in rehabilitating and improving liberation struggle shrines in countries such as Zambia and Mozambique, including sites like Freedom Camp, Nampundwe, Mkushi, Kavalamanja, St. Mary's Cemetery in Zambia, and Changara, Chibavava, Espungabeira, and Chimoio in Mozambique. Social amenities have also been constructed for surrounding communities.

The government remains committed to ensuring that no hero or heroine is forgotten, whether within Zimbabwe or in neighboring countries. Sites like Boma in Angola are also slated for refurbishment. This ongoing process ensures that the resting places of heroes and heroines properly reflect their sacrifices and are preserved as enduring monuments of shared regional history.
