Goyal pushes deeper India-Japan trade, investment ties in Tokyo

Indian Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is spearheading efforts to strengthen trade, investment, and industrial cooperation with Japan during a visit to Tokyo. He held a series of meetings with Japanese ministers, lawmakers, and business leaders, emphasizing collaboration in manufacturing, technology, and high-growth sectors.

Goyal is leading India's largest-ever business delegation to Japan, comprising over 200 industry representatives. He also addressed the Indian diaspora in Tokyo, referring to the nearly 60,000-strong community as "Brand Ambassadors of India" and highlighting their role in fostering economic and people-to-people connections.

Discussions with Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Akazawa Ryosei focused on expanding bilateral trade and investment. These talks followed up on the momentum generated during Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's visit to India for the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit in July. Both sides are working towards attracting 10 trillion yen in Japanese investment into India over the next decade, a target originally set during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit in August 2025.

Further engagements included meetings with Yasutoshi Nishimura, Chairman of the Japan-India Parliamentary Friendship League, to enhance parliamentary exchanges and economic ties. Goyal also met with executives from Toyo Engineering Corporation and ITOCHU Corporation to explore partnerships in engineering, industrial infrastructure, trade, machinery, and emerging business sectors. The minister noted India's expanding industrial base and young population as key drivers for technology and engineering collaborations.
