Grandmother’s Prediction Comes True as Grandchild Is Born on Malaysia’s Independence Day

A family joke became a lasting Independence Day memory when Nor Laila Che Ibrahim gave birth to her child on Malaysia’s 69th National Day.

Before the delivery, Nor Laila’s mother had joked that her grandchild would be born on the country’s anniversary. The prediction came true, leaving Nor Laila surprised and delighted.

“I did not expect the joke to come true. My mother’s words proved true, and her grandchild was finally born on Merdeka Day,” Nor Laila said during the Merdeka Baby Celebration at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II in Kota Bharu. She said the timing created a special memory the family would remember for years.

Nor Laila said she hoped her child would grow up healthy, become a good person and make the family and country proud. Hospital director Dr. Izamin Idris said eight babies were safely delivered there for National Day, five boys and three girls.

The first baby born at the hospital on Aug. 31, 2026, was a girl delivered at 12:10 a.m.
