Greece Arrests 281 in Wildfire Crackdown; Arsonists Face Prison

Greek authorities have arrested 281 individuals in connection with recent wildfires, highlighting a significant crackdown on those responsible for the blazes. Of those detained, 252 are being held for negligence, while 29 face charges of intentional arson, according to fire service spokesperson Yiannis Artopios.

Those convicted of starting fires in Greece could face severe penalties, including up to 20 years in prison and substantial fines of up to 200,000 euros. This strict legal framework underscores the seriousness with which the country is treating the ongoing fire crisis.

A high fire danger warning remains in effect across Greece as of Wednesday. The country has been battling numerous fires, including a significant blaze that erupted in late July northwest of Athens. This particular fire devastated more than 11,000 hectares of pine forests, shrubland, and agricultural areas before it was finally extinguished after five days, exacerbated by strong winds.

Recent arrests include a 59-year-old man in Thessaloniki detained for involvement in over five fires within a two-week period. Additionally, a 33-year-old man was arrested in the Athens region for igniting a portable grill in a forest, reportedly resulting in a 3,000 euro fine.
