Greece Battles Wildfires as Italy Issues Red Alert for Extreme Heat

Wildfires rage across Greece as high temperatures trigger a red alert in 19 Italian cities, from north to south. Firefighters in Greece are battling several blazes, with strong winds hindering efforts in some areas. Hundreds of firefighters worked through the night to contain a large fire near Athens, which threatens the town of Megara. A new fire also broke out on the island of Kefalonia, leading to the evacuation of several settlements. While fires on Crete are largely extinguished, the situation remains tense.

In Italy, the heatwave has prompted the highest level of alert in cities like Rome, Milan, Venice, and Naples. Temperatures have already exceeded 30 degrees Celsius in many parts of the country. Authorities warn that the heat poses a risk not only to the elderly, young children, and those with chronic illnesses but also to healthy and active individuals. The Italian Ministry of Health anticipates that by Tuesday, approximately 25 of the country's 27 major cities will be under red alert, with only Reggio Calabria and Messina expected to have the second-highest orange alert.

Residents in affected areas are advised to stay indoors during the hottest hours, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and drink plenty of fluids. The extreme weather conditions across Europe, marked by consecutive heatwaves and prolonged drought, have created a tinderbox environment, making natural landscapes highly susceptible to fires. In Greece, 13 individuals have been arrested on suspicion of arson, and tragically, three firefighters have lost their lives while combating the blazes.
