Greece extends Canadair deployment to Spain for wildfire fight

Greece has agreed to extend the deployment of its Canadair aircraft in Spain for another 24 hours to assist in combating major wildfires, following a request from the European Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC). The decision comes as scientists predict deteriorating weather conditions across Spain, necessitating continued aerial support.

The Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection confirmed that the extension was granted after evaluating the latest weather forecasts. The ERCC requested the additional day of assistance as part of the European Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). This move highlights Greece's commitment to aiding fellow European nations facing natural disasters.

However, the Greek mission's extension is balanced against the need to ensure domestic preparedness. Meteorologists forecast strong northerly winds, reaching force 7 to 8 Beaufort, and high temperatures for Friday, July 31, and the weekend of August 1-2. These conditions are expected to increase the risk of wildfires in Greece.

Consequently, the Greek aircraft must return to be available for domestic firefighting efforts. Originally, the Greek mission was scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, July 28, with the aircraft returning to Greece on Wednesday, July 29. The ministry emphasized that Greece continues to provide practical assistance to countries affected by major natural disasters while ensuring its own operational readiness for the anticipated increased risks.
