Greece launches 'Neighborhood Nannies' program with financial aid

Greece is introducing a new initiative called "Neighborhood Nannies" aimed at bolstering family support and facilitating a better work-life balance for women. The program, detailed by Deputy Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Elena Rapti, provides financial aid to parents and creates employment opportunities for caregivers.

"With this program, we support the family, but at the same time, we give women the opportunity to harmonize their professional with their family life," Rapti stated. The financial assistance includes 500 euros per month for parents working full-time and 300 euros for those in part-time employment. Similar support is extended to student mothers and individuals registered as unemployed for up to three months.

Eligibility for receiving support is broad, encompassing public and private sector employees, freelancers, and self-employed individuals. It also extends to mothers (biological, adoptive, or foster), fathers with sole parental custody, and any person legally entrusted with a child's care. Student mothers and recently unemployed individuals also qualify for the 300-euro subsidy.

To work as a "neighborhood nanny" under the program, individuals must register on the ntantades.gov.gr platform. Requirements include a minimum of compulsory education plus an online seminar, or a degree in childcare or a related field. Additionally, applicants need a First Aid certificate from a recognized institution, a health certificate, and a clean criminal record. Even grandparents can serve as nannies, provided they meet the necessary qualifications. The program aims to provide income and insurance for caregivers while enabling parents, particularly mothers, to return to or remain in the workforce.
