Greece Pledges 100% Compensation for Hail-Damaged Crops in Larissa

Farmers in the Larissa, Greece, are facing significant crop losses after severe hailstorms devastated their fields. However, the government has pledged full support, with Minister of Agriculture Makis Charakopoulos assuring that "no producer will be left alone in this ordeal."

Charakopoulos visited the affected areas, including Platanoulia, Damasi, Evangelismos, and Domeniko, to assess the damage firsthand. He emphasized the government's commitment to swift, transparent, and just compensation, working in coordination with Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis and Agriculture Minister Margaritis Schinas.

The Greek Agricultural Insurance Organization (Elga) has already deployed teams to begin damage assessments, with agronomists expanding their on-site inspections starting Monday, July 27. Farmers will have until August 10 to submit their damage claims, with a dual system for reporting: using the 2025 OSDE declarations for perennial crops and new declarations for annual crops.

A key measure involves a request to the European Union for an ad hoc program. This program aims to provide 100% compensation based on the insured value, eliminate compensation caps, and facilitate immediate advance payments of 65%. Charakopoulos vowed to maintain constant communication with affected farmers until all damages are compensated.
