Piraeus driver recounts near-death experience after scaffolding collapse

A food delivery driver in Piraeus, Greece, recounted the harrowing experience of being trapped beneath collapsing scaffolding while riding his motorcycle during a severe storm.

Antonis Giorgis was navigating the busy Grigori Lambrakis Avenue on July 24, 2026, when sections of metal scaffolding and sheeting suddenly gave way, falling onto the road and pinning him beneath the debris. The incident, which happened during peak hours, caused panic among bystanders. Dramatic footage captured Giorgis's cries for help as citizens quickly came to his aid.

Speaking to Star news, Giorgis described losing consciousness briefly upon impact. When he regained awareness, he found himself immobilized under the heavy structure, disoriented and unsure of his condition. "As soon as I came to my senses, I became very anxious. I was terrified, I lost my composure," he recounted. "I kept asking 'What happened, where am I, what state am I in?' I panicked and started shouting 'Help,' because I couldn't understand how I was."

The near-fatal incident underscores the risks faced by individuals working in urban environments, particularly delivery personnel, and raises questions about the safety of construction sites. The collapse occurred amidst intense weather conditions battering the Attica region, suggesting that inadequate securing of the scaffolding may have contributed to the disaster.
