Greece unveils new spatial framework to guide sustainable tourism development

Greece has launched a new Special Spatial Framework for Tourism (ΕΧΠ-Τ), a national plan designed to regulate and guide the sustainable development of the tourism sector. This framework, published through a Joint Ministerial Decision by the Ministers of Environment and Energy and Tourism, sets clear rules for where and how tourism can expand across the country.

The ΕΧΠ-Τ aims to define strategic directions and long-term goals for the spatial organization of tourism, ensuring economic, environmental, and social sustainability. It seeks to foster a more organized and viable approach to tourism growth, while simultaneously protecting the natural environment, local communities, and the unique character of each region.

Key objectives of the framework include establishing transparent regulations for new tourism investments, improving the organization of hotels and other tourism infrastructure, and protecting areas that experience high tourism pressure. Special emphasis is placed on islands and regions with environmental sensitivities. The plan also guides urban planning for the coming years, integrating tourism policy into spatial planning without conflicts with other land uses.

This initiative provides Greece with a strategic institutional document for tourism development, addressing a long-standing need for a modern and updated tool. The framework comes at a time when Greek tourism is evolving dynamically and facing new challenges, such as climate change and increased pressure on popular destinations. The ΕΧΠ-Τ seeks to strike a balance between development, environmental preservation, and quality of life, enhancing the overall tourism experience and promoting diverse forms of tourism beyond traditional offerings.
