Greece warns of hefty fines for beach rule violations

As the summer season reaches its peak, Greek authorities are issuing stern reminders about beach regulations, warning that violations can result in substantial fines, some reaching thousands of euros. The focus is on ensuring safety and protecting the environment, with particular attention to activities like Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP), noise pollution, free camping, and marine contamination.

For SUP users, regulations mandate that only one person can be on the board, wearing a life jacket, and staying within designated limits, either near buoys or up to 500 meters from shore where permitted. Failure to wear a life jacket incurs a 250-euro fine, while exceeding permitted zones can lead to penalties from 50 to 200 euros. SUP use is also prohibited after sunset and before sunrise due to reduced visibility.

Playing with paddles (raketes) is restricted to specially designated areas. Violations causing disturbance or endangering swimmers can result in fines ranging from 100 to 1,000 euros. Similarly, using speakers that create noise pollution can lead to fines of 200 to 500 euros, escalating to 2,000 euros for violations involving boats.

Penalties for marine pollution are particularly severe, starting from lower amounts and reaching up to 58,000 euros in serious cases. Free camping carries a fine of 300 euros per person, with potential immediate legal action depending on the offense's gravity. Authorities stress that adherence to these rules is crucial for the safety of all beachgoers and the preservation of the natural environment.

Professionals in the water sports sector highlight the critical importance of life jackets, not just as a recommendation but as a fundamental safety requirement for all sea activities. Vassilis Farfaras, a water sports operator in Kalamata, emphasized that life jackets should be worn during SUP, kayaking, pedal boating, or any other recreational water activity. He noted that while many people are unaware of safety rules, professionals consistently inform visitors before equipment rental. The growing popularity of SUP has led to increased personal equipment purchases, but usage guidelines always include a strong recommendation for life jackets.
